Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need to Know

If you don't see your question here, feel free to reach out. We're always happy to help future campmates prepare for an incredible week on playa.

Is Rootpile a good camp for first-time Burners?

Absolutely. Every year we welcome first-time Burners into our community. While Burning Man requires personal preparation and self-reliance, we're happy to share what we've learned and help you feel confident before you arrive.

Do I need an RV?

Not at all.

Many campers stay in tents, while others bring vans, trailers, or RVs. We'll help you determine the best setup based on your experience and camping style.

What's included with camp dues?

Your camp dues help provide shared infrastructure including:

  • Camp power for tent campers

  • Potable water

  • Showers

  • Portable restrooms

  • Community dinners

  • Shared kitchen

  • Bar

  • Shade structures

  • Workshops and entertainment

  • Camp infrastructure and operations

See our Camp Dues page for complete details.

Can I bring my own food?

Absolutely.

Many campers bring their own meals and snacks. We also gather each evening for a community dinner, which is included with your camp dues.

How do the showers work?

Rootpile provides shared camp showers for members. Please be mindful of water usage and leave the shower area clean for the next person.

Can I bring my own instrument?

Please do!

Jam sessions happen throughout the week, and campers are encouraged to bring instruments they'd enjoy playing on playa.

How much power is available?

Tent campers have access to shared camp power for AC’s, charging phones, lights, CPAP machines, and other small personal electronics.

Do I have to volunteer?

Yes.

Every camper is expected to contribute a few volunteer shifts during the week. Whether you're helping in the kitchen, tending bar, greeting visitors, or supporting camp operations, everyone plays a role in making Rootpile possible.

Can friends visit the camp?

Absolutely.

Rootpile is a welcoming theme camp, and visitors are encouraged to stop by for workshops, music, dancing, and community. We simply ask that overnight camping and camp resources remain reserved for registered camp members.

When should I arrive?

Most campers arrive during Build Week to help set up camp before Burning Man officially begins. We'll provide recommended arrival dates and gate information as the event approaches.

When do I leave?

Most campers stay through the end of the event and help with teardown during Strike. We encourage everyone to participate if their schedule allows, since many hands make the work go quickly.

What should I bring?

Every camper should arrive prepared for a week in the Black Rock Desert.

You'll need personal camping gear, clothing for a wide range of temperatures, food and snacks, water containers, lighting, bike, dust protection, and anything else required to remain self-reliant.

We'll provide a detailed packing guide before the event.

Is Rootpile family-friendly?

During the day, yes. Rootpile welcomes visitors of all ages for workshops, music, and community activities.

As with many parts of Black Rock City, evenings and late-night programming are intended for adults and may not always be appropriate for children. Parents should use their own discretion.

Can I bring my pet?

No.

Burning Man does not allow pets, and Rootpile follows that policy.
